This work is a collaboration created for the exhibition “Trainspotting 2020” by HUTKASMACHNAA studio, which produced a series of model subway cars inspired by metro systems from major cities around the world. The project was initiated by Andrei Busel, the author and maker of the train models, who invited prominent Belarusian artists to reinterpret and paint each carriage. The presented piece is based on a Stockholm metro car, reimagined through a playful yet symbolic artistic lens. The artist sought to reflect the spirit of Sweden—its history, culture, and visual identity—while staying true to their own style. The concept emerged instantly: the elongated form of the metro car evoked the silhouette of a Viking longship (drakkar). In this version, the train becomes a vessel crewed by Viking-artists seated inside. Instead of weapons, they hold the tools of artistic creation—brushes, palettes, and instruments that define their craft. Their names are inscribed on the windows, connecting each figure to legendary sagas and artistic lineage. On the roof of the carriage, a stylized sail is depicted, bearing text inspired by Viking sagas, completing the transformation of a modern urban object into a traveling myth. The work fuses contemporary urban culture with ancient Nordic symbolism, offering a humorous yet thoughtful reflection on heritage, creativity, and the many forms of journeys—both literal and artistic.

About the artist

The artist working under the pseudonym Cowek is Yevgeny, originally from Lida. His creative journey began in childhood and has been evolving for more than two decades. His first street artwork, created in 2001, still remains in its original place — a lasting marker of the beginning of his artistic path. Yevgeny received his professional training at the A.K. Hlebov State Art College and later at the Belarusian State Academy of Arts, where he specialized as an artist, sculptor, and educator. His practice spans a wide range of visual art forms: sculpture, graphics, painting, graffiti, and street art. He has also worked in art restoration and in a mosaic-making workshop, which has significantly expanded his technical and artistic expertise. Cowek has participated in and organized numerous exhibitions and festivals both in Belarus and abroad. He is one of the founders of the street art community SIGNAL (2011–2015), which played an important role in promoting and shaping public awareness of street art in the country. The community organized exhibitions, lectures, and — in 2013 — the first mural festival in Mogilev, a landmark event in the development of Belarusian street art. The gallery is proud to collaborate with Cowek, as he is one of the most multifaceted and influential figures on the contemporary Belarusian art scene. His extensive professional experience, his contribution to the growth of street art culture, and his distinctive artistic style make his involvement in the gallery’s projects especially valuable and significant.
